Liberated Motherhood Talks by Dr Sophie Brock

When we start to see how motherhood is about so much more beyond our individual stories, and there is a collective narrative and experience that connects us as mothers, that is when we unlock our potential.

When you seek to free yourself from the shackles of perfect motherhood, you pave a path, remove the roadblocks, and provide inspiration for your children and others to live an authentic and enriched life.

What are we seeking Liberation from as Mothers?

I explain the social construction of motherhood, the ‘consumption’ of motherhood, and how our beliefs about Motherhood shape our experience as Mothers. I outline of the ‘mummy wars’ and how they keep mothers distracted and disempowered. The talk finishes with the ‘8 rules of perfect motherhood’, inviting you to begin to ‘see’ these as you move forward in your experience of mothering.

23 minutes long.

The ‘fish tank’ of Motherhood and Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Glennon Doyle’s book ‘Untamed’ opens with a story of the ‘caged’ cheetah Tabitha who is tamed but senses her innate wildness. I draw parallels between this story and the social conditioning that we experience as Mothers through the analogy of the ‘fish tank’. Motherhood can both intensify – or create – a feeling of being ‘caged’, while also providing us a catalyst and opportunity for immense growth, power, and transformation.

Rest as Patriarchal Resistance

This is not a training trying to convince you to take on ‘self care’ as part of your mental load and to-do list. In this talk I unpack the exhausting and yet sometimes exhilarating effects of ‘doing it all’ and how to re-orient to YOU after spending so long ‘doing’ for everyone else.

Performing the ‘good mother’

This training explains the connections between ‘performance’ in motherhood, good mother myths, and self-worth. I talk about the ways our children, and the domestic realm, are both set up as ‘markers’ of ‘good motherhood’ in our society, and why this is problematic. How we ‘perform’ in motherhood shapes how we construct our sense of who we are, of how we see ourselves, how others see us, and contribute to intergenerational stories on what it means to be a ‘good mother’.

‘Good Mums’ aren’t ‘Angry Mums’

There is a difference between allowing space for the expression of anger, and releasing anger on our children. In this talk I describe these differences and offer a step-by-step process for rupture and repair with our children, and for shame resilience for ourselves. I explain the opportunities we may miss when we ONLY focus on coping strategies in the moment when processing our anger.

Financially Valuing your Mothering

Mothers live within competing systems of value, that reveres work that results in financial gain, and penalizes unpaid care-work. This is evidenced through the ‘motherhood penalty’ that I unpack in this talk. I reflect on possibilities for change within the system and how to begin such changes individually in our lives.

Ambivalence in Motherhood

Ambivalence in motherhood is not apathy – it does not mean ‘not caring’. It means feeling and caring deeply, and being pulled in seemingly opposite directions. We can feel ambivalence about both our role and identity as mothers, and about our children themselves. In this talk I explain ambivalence, reflecting on why ambivalence is important for our growth, our children’s growth, and our relationships with our children. I offer a process for learning how to embrace and integrate ambivalence.

Integrated Motherhood

The process of ‘integration’ in motherhood involves interrogating what ‘shoulds’, beliefs, stories, ideologies, and communities we align with. Sometimes, when we go through intense challenge, breakdown, and transformation – that is so often part of being a Mother – we can reach out to grab onto things to ‘anchor’ us. This can be useful unless and until we start to feel ‘weighed down’. This talk reflects on how to embrace an ‘integrated motherhood’.

Your units on Facebook are giving me life! The more I watch, the more I feel like I’m breaking apart a lot of things holding me back, it’s empowering and just plain refreshing to be validated on so many levels. I didn’t realise how much I needed it and still need to hear it all.
